Summer programs, tutoring seen as key to curbing pandemic learning loss

Patricia Morgan, Executive Director of JerseyCAN, the nonprofit education advocacy organization, says that though New Jersey has some of the best public schools in the country, only half our students were on grade level even before the pandemic-related shutdowns. And the risk of summer learning loss — which happens every year — could compound the losses from this last year of virtual learning.
In an interview Tuesday, Gov. Phil Murphy said learning loss is an equity issue, with “the loss steeper in Black and brown communities than on average in our state. And we’ll do everything we can to get our kids back up to par.” That includes tutoring and summer programs, he said.
